Prof. Dr. Şener Oktik was born in Nevşehir in 1955 and completed his primary and secondary education in Ankara. He studied Physics Engineering at Ankara University (1972-1977) and graduated with MSc in Physics Engineering. After working for a short period as a research assistant at the same university, he won the Ministry of Education scholarship to study in England and went to Cambridge in September, 1978. He attended English classes for six months before he was accepted by Durham University for PhD studies in Applied Physics and Electronics. He returned to Turkey in 1982 after being rewarded his PhD degree in the area of solar cells.

He started working as an assistant professor in Physics Department, Selçuk University and was appointed to the post of associate professor in the field of solid state physics in 1986.

In 1986, he was invited back to England to carry out a project at Industrial Research Laboratories, Durham University, which was financed by Imperial Chemical Incorporation (ICI). Following this project which received an international patent, he joined another project on CdTe Solar Cells carried out at British Petroleum Research Laboratories in 1988. During his work at BP Research Laboratories, he organized and conducted joint research projects with such universities as London-Imperial, Southampton, Bath, Brunel, Northcumbria and Durham within the framework of university-industry collaboration.
