Graduate Degree Programmes[top of page]
Students who have obtained a B.A. or B.S, an M.A. or M.S., or an equivalent degree from an accredited university are eligible to enrol in masters or doctoral programmes, respectively.
The graduate schools, known as 'institutes', offer courses and degrees in two main areas: Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Each institute coordinates the curricula for its respective departments.

Academic Advisor[top of page]
In Muğla University, every newcomer is assigned to an academic advisor proposed by the relevant heads of department and confirmed after the approval of the faculty/school committee. The academic advisor acts as a guide for the students who might have any concerns about the courses, examinations, the university regulations or other subjects related to their education and training. The students are under the supervision of these advisors up to their graduation. However, it is the student's responsibility to select courses in accordance with prerequisites, the advisor's recommendations, the departmental curriculum and the requirements of the degree.

Course Load and Degree Requirements[top of page]
Course grades and graduation status are determined according to principles of the credit system and evaluations are done using the relative grading scheme. Students must fulfil all the degree requirements determined by their department also and at graduation their cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) must be 2.00 or higher on a scale of 4.00.
There are two main types of courses offered: compulsory and elective. Turkish Language, Principles of Atatürk and History of Turkish Republic, and Basic Information Technologies are the non-credit but compulsory courses whereas various courses in Painting, Music and Physical Education are elective. Students may attend the Foreign Language Preparatory Programme if they wish in the first year. Students are required to take all the compulsory courses and some of the elective courses determined by the department or the programme in which they are registered. Each course is allotted a predetermined number of credit hours and students, in order to graduate, must complete the minimum required credit hours throughout their education. Students, according to their area of interest, may choose to take certain number of elective courses offered by another department or programme.

Foreign Language Education[top of page]
Muğla University offers foreign language classes within a certain quota. School of Foreign Languages plays a key role as a central support service for those students who need to develop their foreign language skills, particularly English. Students, who wish to register to the 30-week Foreign Language Preparatory Programme during the first year of their education, are required to enter the 'Placement Test' at the beginning of the fall term. Attending the Foreign Language Preparatory Programme is compulsory for the students studying Archaeology, Electronics and Computer Education, Travelling Management, Hospitality Management, Recreation, Foreign Trade, Travelling and Touring Services, Civil Aviation and Ground Handling, and Radio and Television Broadcasting. Those who pass the 'Foreign Language Competency Examination' set by the School of Foreign Languages or those who have an adequate score from one of the internationally accepted language proficiency examinations (TOEFL, TWE, IELTS, FCE, CPE) or those who obtain a score of no less than 60 in KPDS (National Language Proficiency Exam) become exempt from the preparatory year and can directly register to the department they are placed. Students who cannot successfully complete the compulsory language preparatory programme are allowed to enrol to the first year and continue their studies but they are required to pass the Foreign Language Competency Examination at some stage before they graduate. Students, who successfully complete the preparatory programme, can continue to take foreign language classes during their studies. The Foreign Language Preparatory Year is a separate programme and is not included in the normal period of study.

Admission and Registration[top of page]
Admission to undergraduate programmes of the University is based upon the rules governing higher education in Turkey. Applications for the first year of undergraduate programmes must be made through the Students Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). Candidates, who take part in the nationwide University Entrance Examination (ÖSS) and earn a placement according to the grades they get and their preferences, have the right to register for the faculties and schools of Muğla University.

The enrolment procedures of the freshmen to various departments and programmes of the University are carried out at the registration offices of the faculties and schools and with the coordination of the Registrar's Office. For the departments in Faculty of Fine Arts, in School of Physical Education and Sports, and for the departments of Painting-Crafts Education and Music Education, applicants should also pass specific competency exams set by the University, testing their skills in the respective fields.

To begin graduate studies in Muğla University, all applicants are required to take the Entrance Examination for Postgraduate Education (LES) held by ÖSYM and hold an acceptable grade from one of the foreign language proficiency examinations. In addition, each department establishes its own criteria for admission.

Currently studying students are required to re-register at the beginning of each semester within the period stated in the academic calendar. Students can also do the re-registration and course enrolment procedures online, logging onto their account from www.digital.mu.edu.tr. Students are obliged to pay the education fees determined yearly by the Council of Ministers.

Transfer[top of page]
A student who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate programme at Muğla University or another institution, and has successfully completed at least one semester may transfer to another undergraduate programme of the University. Applications are considered on the basis of regulations set by the Turkish Higher Education Council and the University Senate. The selection of the students is carried out by the related faculty boards. Graduates from two-year vocational programmes may also apply for transfer to undergraduate programmes, conditions of which are determined by national rules and regulations.

Double Major Undergraduate Programmes[top of page]
Students can follow the entire undergraduate programme of another department. This is called a Double Major Programme. Students may apply to the announced double major programme no earlier than the beginning of the third and no later than the fifth semester. Their cumulative GPA should not be less than 3.00 on a scale of 4.00. The second major undergraduate diploma is given to those students who have the right to graduate from their own departments and who complete the double major programme with a GPA of at least 2.00. A double major programme requires at least 48 credit hours. Grades received during and at the end of a double major programme has no effect on the graduation grade received from the main programme attended. However, if a student's GPA in his own programme falls under 2.00, he is dismissed from the double major programme.

Minor Undergraduate Programmes[top of page]
Successful students with a GPA of at least 3.00 and who are interested in other subjects may apply to a minor undergraduate programme no earlier than the beginning of the third semester. The minor programme, in which students follow the basic courses of another programme, consists of at least 18 credits. The minor certificate is given to those students who have the right to graduate from their own departments and who complete the minor programme with a GPA of at least 2.00.

Summer School[top of page]
Summer School courses are education programmes held outside the fall and spring semesters and during the summer holiday. Among the aims of the summer school courses are to provide education and learning facilities during the summer time, to improve the education productivity, to aid the progress of those students who are registered in minor undergraduate or double major programmes, and to provide students with another opportunity to re-attend the courses in which they have been unsuccessful. Summer school lasts for seven weeks not including course registrations and exams. During the summer school courses, four subjects can be taken with no more than 12 credits. The courses are equivalent in credit to those offered in the fall and spring semesters but contain twice as many class hours per week.

Examinations and Assessment[top of page]
Apart from work conducted throughout the semester, students must take a final examination at the end of each semester and at least one midterm examination for each course. Midterm and final examinations are held at the appropriate place and hour as decided and announced by the university. The student is given a grade by the course instructor by taking into account the midterm examinations, final examinations, the semester work and attendance.
Semester grades for practical studies and other non-lecture courses are determined by an evaluation of the student's overall work and performance throughout the semester.
Examination and course grades are announced on www.digital.mu.edu.tr web site for students to log on and learn the results.

Final Project and Summer Training[top of page]
The students must undertake a final year project and fulfil a vocational training period if the graduation from their faculties or schools requires the completion of a final year project and /or training periods. In this case, 'Muğla University Final Year Project Directive' and 'Muğla University Industrial Training Directive' are applied.

Successful Students[top of page]
Students who graduate with a GPA of at least 2.00 are considered 'successful'. A student who obtains a GPA between 3.00-3.49 is considered an 'honour student' and one who obtains a GPA between 3.50-4.00 is considered a 'high honour student'.

Scholarships and Job Opportunities[top of page]
Successful students and those with limited financial means can benefit from the scholarships and loans provided by the 'Sıtkı Koçman Foundation' and the University administration. Students are also given advice and guidance on loans and scholarships provided by different governmental/non-governmental organizations, charities and foundations.
Sıtkı Koçman Foundation provides scholarships both for undergraduate and postgraduate studies and special loans for handicapped students, for children of the martyr, and for students suffered from natural disasters.

The scholarship by the Prime Ministry Fund is granted on academic success. Students may apply for the scholarship personally with the application forms available in Governor's Offices and successful applications are announced at faculties and schools. Universities regularly inform the Fund about the academic standing of the students who receive funding and those who cannot maintain the required success rate are no longer granted the scholarship.

The University also offers free lunch tickets within a quota for students with limited financial means. Students who wish to receive such aid should apply to their faculty or school administration.

The Health, Culture and Sports Activities Office provides part time job opportunities for students who wish to work during their studies. Students can work for certain hours at such places as Dining Halls, Culture and Arts Centre, Internet Café, Sport Halls, Central Library, International Relations Office, and the Office of Computing and Information Services.
