Administrated and technically supported by the Computing and Information Services Office, the University provides central computing and networking services for the educational, research and administration needs of the University. Campus computing environment is comprised of a number of departmental networks, PC laboratories, and multi-user hosts connected around a campus-wide network. There are over 2,200 computers used in PC laboratories, administrative offices and by academic staff within the University. About 1,200 computers in 31 laboratories serve for students and researchers, whereas over 240 computers are allocated for the private use of academic staff. Faculties and schools hold 68 projection machines and 65 notebooks in total to assist teaching staff in supporting their lectures visually. The network infrastructure of the University has been greatly improved in recent years where the connection to World Wide Web through ULAKBIM (National Academic Centre) was increased from 1 Mbps to 16 Mbps and 1-4 Gbps fibre optic cables reaching 13,000 metres in total has been installed among faculties and schools through the campus. The Web Mail System gives over 1,000 staff and 17,000 students the opportunity to easily access electronic mail, free of charge. 20 MB web space is provided for each student account. Students can do online course registration, track their exam results and use Internet banking facilities with the user names and passwords given by the University. IP Telephony Service, which enables voice communication over Internet using the fibre optic backbone, makes direct external calls possible for every academic and administrative personnel. In an effort to increase full computer literacy within the University and the region, Computer and Information Services Office organize computer courses for the University staff and public. Courses on Basic Information Technologies have been run since 1996 and attendees receive their certificates on successful completion. The Office also provides training on the usage of Student Information System for all teaching staff. |
