Muğla University was established in 1992 as a state university with four proposed faculties, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Technical Education and Faculty of Aquaculture and Fisheries. Muğla School of Management, which was founded in 1975 as the first higher education institution in Muğla and had been the part of Ankara Academy of Economics and Administrative Sciences and then İzmir Dokuz Eylül University, was tied to Muğla University on its establishment. Muğla Vocational School too, which was founded in 1989 as part of Dokuz Eylül University, joined Muğla University. 1993 was the first academic year of Muğla University with two active faculties and one vocational school. In the following academic years, Ula Vocational School and Ortaca Vocational School in 1994, and Milas Vocational School and School of Physical Education and Sports in 1995 were added to the existing ones respectively. Muğla School of Health and the Faculty of Technical Education welcomed its first students in 1997. Fethiye Vocational School began its educational activities in 1998 and Dalaman Vocational School in 1999. Faculty of Education and the School of Tourism and Hotel Management admitted their first students in 2001. Fethiye School of Health in 2002, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Aquaculture and Fisheries and Yatağan Vocational School in 2004 received their first students.

Since the day it was founded, Muğla University has been in pursuit of quality higher education and research to contribute to the socio-cultural, scientific, and technological development of our country. Developing a systematic and comprehensive education programme to serve the thorough dissemination, discovery, and application of knowledge, requires a competent infrastructure. With this idea, Muğla University embarked on a fast advancement and investment project in 1994. Its determination to test the limits has also been supported by the charitable guardian of the University, Sıtkı Koçman, whose financial contributions to education deserve a great admiration.

When first founded, with the aim of supporting credible instruction and research in various areas of social, natural, pedagogical sciences, arts and humanities as well as vocational training, Muğla University had only 1,128 students in one department and three programmes. Muğla University today takes pride in its current state as a young but rapidly developing university with six faculties, two graduate schools, four schools, seven vocational schools, eight research and application centres, and all other facilities established on a 208,000 square meters indoors area serving over 20,000 students.
