Prof. Dr. John Haldon, one of the world's leading scholars of Late Antiquity and Byzantine history and Director of the Climate Change & History Research Initiative at Princeton University, delivered a two-day lecture series at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University.
Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University (MSKU) welcomed renowned historian Prof. Dr. John Haldon for a two-day academic program exploring the intersections of climate science, history, and archaeology.
The lecture series, held at the Atatürk Kültür Merkezi, attracted strong student participation. In his first presentation, "Can History Help Shape Policy? Societal Responses to Past Climate Challenges and Their Implications for Today," Haldon examined how historical evidence can inform contemporary climate policy. His second lecture focused on the integration of climate proxy data, historical archives, and archaeological evidence, offering participants an insight into the interdisciplinary methods used in environmental history research.
The event featured simultaneous interpretation, enabling students to engage directly with the speaker and participate in an extended question-and-answer session in English.
During his visit, Haldon also met with Rector of MSKU , Prof. Dr. Turhan Kaçar, to discuss academic collaboration and research.
One of the foremost authorities on Late Antiquity and Byzantine history, Haldon is widely recognized for his pioneering work on the relationship between climate change, environmental stress, state formation, and societal resilience. In addition to his role at Princeton University, he is a member of the British Academy and several other international scholarly academies.
